Until the 1950s, black-and-white line drawings were a common feature of fiction for all ages (think Dickens and Phiz): a concept which would seem strange to a contemporary adult audience, who generally only experience illustration when reading to a child or if they're a fan of graphic novels!
The Big Picture campaign aims to promote the genre by expanding the market for, increasing the supply of and enhancing the status of picture books in the UK. Backed by the major children's publishers and a wide range of well-known writers and illustrators, it's a great campaign to get behind.
The website (www.bigpicture.org) is full of excellent resources and information - so if it's a picturebook you're working on, get inspired!
Happy writing!
